Canadian registered vehicle to Europe and Africa, what is needed?

We have a Canadian registered (British Columbia) Toyota Land Cruiser that we've traveled with in Central America for the past 5 years while we were working there. We are now planning to work for an NGO in Sierra Leone and we'd like to take the truck with us. The plan is to ship from New Jersey, USA to Bremerhaven, Germany and then drive down.

What is needed as far as paperwork is concerned? We'd like to avoid a carnet as we'll be in Sierra Leone long term (probably get registration there).

We'll first be in Europe of course and then traveling south through to Spain, crossing to Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea and Sierra Leone (or another route if carnets are required from any of these countries).

We've traveled extensively through Central America and are familiar with the procedures there but Africa is new to us and Europe is new in our vehicle.

Check the CAA

Hi Cruiser Guy,

No special paperwork required for Europe and Morocco (aside from insurance which is easily obtained at ADAC in Germany when you arrive) but I believe a carnet is required for Mauritania. You can check out the CAA website for a cost calculator which lists the countries where a carnet is required.

Perhaps you could plan your trip around those countries needing the carnet.

The ADAC carnet website says that a carnet is not required but recommended for Senegal or Mali but is not required elsewhere in Africa.

Anyone have recent confirmation?

You absolutely need a carnet de passage in South and East-Africa. Check it out on this page:

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
