Extending a carnet in South Africa

Slightly different question than a recent post regarding extending a carnet in the SACU:

I finished an overland trip a few months ago and want to sell a UK-registered vehicle in South Africa to an overlander who 1) wishes to keep it UK-registered, 2) wants to take over the carnet by way of a one-year extension through RAC. (It is currently in storage in Cape Town; I am no longer in South Africa.)

However, I am running out of time to sell the vehicle on the current carnet because it expires in January 2013. We have had to drop the price accordingly. I have heard that it is possible to remotely obtain a 3-month extension for the vehicle to remain in South Africa. I suppose this would entail extending the carnet for three months.

Does anyone know how to go about doing this? Thanks so much for any help.

Justin

Hi,

Mrs. Yolandi Rew from the southafrican customs helped me a lot with my extention. You can bay a 3 months extention (Letter of Grace) BEFORE your carned expires for R550 or Substitution for around R1800 Tel +27-(0)12 452 4782.

You'll need to talk to the RAC I think. They seem to be tightening up on various things and what was accepted practice before might not be now so I think whatever anyone tells you here it would be best to check direct.

Ultimately the bit you care about is the UK carnet and getting your money back so you need to make sure you don't do anything that will prejudice that first and foremost. If it makes you feel more comfortable ring up and ask the question hypothetically - ie if I were to want to sell my car after a trip how would I go about that ....

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
