Leaving bike in Malawi for few weeks whilst I leave the country
I am currently traveling slowly up through Africa using a carnet for the bike when entering each country. In December I will arrive in Malawi and want to leave the bike there for a couple of weeks whilst I fly north to join my girl friend for Christmas. Any one know if I will have any issues flying out of the country (I will have a return ticket fir two weeks time) or if there are any specific arrangements I need to make with the cushions authorities in advance?

Also any suggestions add to a good place to leave it will be appreciated.

No problem with doing this and no need to mention on entry into Malawi.

We flew back several times (for between 2 and 6 weeks at a time) over a year and left the car each time. As long as your carnet is valid the car /bike can be in country. Don't say anything on entering the country, it may cause confusion.

As to where to leave it I'd suggest asking somewhere you stay. There are a few lakeside places that would probably oblige. It's less likely in Lilongwe where parking is at more of a premium, though you could try Mabuya (lodge/backpackers).

Many thanks for the reply itchyfeet. I feel much more comfortable now that it won't be a drama (comfortable enough to start booking airline tickets). Apologies for awful wording in original message - Google auto correct continues to catch me out

Should have updated this sometime ago. Just to confirm I had no issues leaving the bike in Malawi for 2 weeks whilst I flew out to visit girlfriend.

Mabuya Lodge / Backpackers kindly looked after the bike for me in my absence at no cost (they were also storing a couple of cards at the same time )

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
