Road condition in Nigeria – Camellon
Hi everyone,

I would like to know the road condition around the border Ikom, Nigeria – Mamfe, Cameroon.
Did anyone drive there recently?

My husband and I are traveling by K-car. It is 4x4(temporary) but very very small. We cannot drive if there is a big hole, a big puddle in the road. We are worried about it and thinking to taking a ferry or shipment instead.
We are in Calabar, Nigeria now, and heading to Cape town in SA.

Any information would be helpful.

I did it, 30 days ago on motorbie. Any problem for. All tarmac, not big holes.

Hi Yuko,

You can ride on pavement from Nigeria all the way to the border between Gabon and Congo.

In Cameroun, stay on National roads if you want pavement. Don't use provincial roads: they may start on pavement but may turn to dirt quickly.

In Gabon, the road to libreville has some small bad parts but nothing to worry about.

As from entering in Congo, the dry season is starting there. Dirt will be dry but holes will be there. Maybe you'll need a shovel to fill some of the holes. Offer some money to locals and they will work for you. Bring some wood to build ramps

Do you think National Road in Cameroon is good even in rainy season? In Nigeria, the main road was flooded, so we are worried if we get the similar unfavorable situation.

And we worried about:
- around the border Gabon(Ndende) - RoC
- around the border RoC(Tombo) – DRC

If you have an experience around there, would be glad if you share it.

Hi Yuko,

You can drive through Cameroun all on paved road. Same for Gabon. You should not be worried. Locals drive cars too. If for one reason a section of the road would be bad, they would show you where to pass.


As for Congo-Brazza,

I did not ride to Tombo. I rode to Dolisie. So i can't comment on that.

From Ndende to Dolisie, it should be dry. My understanding is that you are driving a low clearance car. The road maybe a bit rough from cars/truck passing during the rainy season. So bring some a shovel and wood in case a section would be too bad.

If you want to remove some stress, ask for a multiple entry visa for Gabon. This way you can always turn back and go for plan B.
