South Africa 3rd party insurance

Hi there, I’m shipping my car into South Africa and have heard that 3rd party insurance is included in the price of fuel, can any one confirm this? I’ve been doing lots of research and even called the SA aa who thought that it was included but weren’t sure about for foreigners vehicles! I usually get the 3rd party insurance at border crossings when available but that won’t be an option until I leave for Namibia.
Cheers.

Hi Tony

I am in RSA at the moment; my brother lives there. My brother’s understanding is that there is no legal requirement to buy 3rd party insurance and in theory everyone has some form of state coverage.

Having had a bike written off by someone with this cover last year i’d not recommend it even if you are theoretically covered(which i am not sure you are). I am told it takes years to pay out and the gov/insurer then try and make recovery from you.

Im no expert so do verify this, but hopefully this is a helpful pointer. Santam are the biggest RSA insurer i think if you want somewhere to start.

Cheers
Andy

Bought fully comp on a British registered bike when I was out there for 3 months from an insurance broker I found in a magazine. Did not use it so can not say much else.

Hello Tonyoakey,

I shipped my car in April last year.
No insurance has to be payed.
Only the Carnet was stamped and off you go to explore a beautiful continent.

Kind regards,
Tom

The fuel price includes a 3rd party insurance, but it only covers public property. So this is only half the story....

Unfortunately very many people don't have an additional 3rd party insurance covering private property - meaning that, if somebody bumps your vehicle, don't expect any compensation
