Unleaded fuel in RIM and Senegal?
Hi guys!
this question might be completely stupid but amazingly i found no recent information on the hubb.
What kind of "essence" is sold these days in RIM and Senegal? is it unleaded?
Was there in 2007 and had to take the cat out of the bike in order to run on leaded. Is the situation still the same?
Sorry if the question is too dunb

Unleaded common in RIM. Can't speak for Senegal I'm afraid but I'm sure this topic has been discussed recently, maybe in a different section? We used a filter and clear plastic container to check colour/contamination and found no problems in a month of touring last Nov. If it's black market fuel from Algeria it may be higher octane than "official" Mauri fuel from the pump. Don't risk running low - you may have to hunt around to find it.
Ride safe,
Simon.
Google brought this up, in which the author says "Super" is available, 840CFA/L

According to Wikipedia, the only place in Africa you have any chance of buying leaded petrol is Algeria. So I think you are fine in Senegal. Not sure if you would pick up Algerian fuel in RIM??

Algerian fuel is brought in for the black market in the north and is generally of a higher quality than the official stuff!

Higher quality, but according to Wikipedia the Algerian refineries might not have been updated and still blend TEL into the petrol...

Yes, any of the HUBB'ers travelling in RIM with atomic spectroscopy equipment will be better placed to determine the lead content of imported Algerian petrol!!
But seriously, if there are any Algerian members they might be able to say if all refineries have been upgraded.

Well, another way to look at it is that there's a good chance you'll ruin the cat riding in Africa, but what's the big deal ? Just asking. I mean, sure, environmentally it isn't the best idea, but I think most bikes will still run OK even when the cat is destroyed by lead, and the MOT here doesn't test it.
I'd be more concerned about diesel mixed in the fuel, water or even sand and dirt.
Laurent
PS: I refueled in Mauri and plenty of pretty dodgy places in Africa and didn't feel the difference. Wish I would go back soon..
