It’s 3 years ago but I just went to Cameroon embassy/consulate in Calabar (Eastern Nigeria) and IIRC just showed them an invitation letter from the hotel I booked in Yaounde using Booking.com. Took 2-3 hours only.

That is the norm in other countries as well: an invite from pre-booked lodging. Sometimes it's necessary to engage a company which specializes in issuing invitations--I'm thinking of Russia, at least for US passport holders. And working or business visas might be different, requiring documentation from your in-country employer.
I don't remember ever getting an invite from an actual person, despite having journeyed to countries specifically in order to visit friends there. I've listed friends' names and addresses in response to questions about where I'll be staying, but haven't had to submit letters of invitation. Yet.
All caveats apply, but I hope that's helpful.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
