I did the trip on my r1150gs so you could certainly do it on an 800…..except perhaps the muddy DRC bit which I avoided by putting the bike on a pirogue in Cabinda (Angola) which then crossed the river Congo to Soyo (also Angola) whilst we took a 15 minute $30 flight as foreigners were not allowed on the pirogue.

The Kalahari can be very hot too - I've seen 53 C in Botswana in summer.
Congo wet seasons are March/April and October/November; I've travelled in these seasons and it takes care and time, but is doable.
