All true & correct. Use the wrong compound and it will fail very quickly.
Look for a local industrial Bearing and seal supplier. They should sort you out for a few pennies. If you get stuck, let me know the sizes and I'll pick you some up.
(Best way to identify a used o-ring is to note the ID and OD then measure the cross-section in two directions; this gives a good chance of guessing the size it was before it was squashed)
