50 year old record still stands
On the 18th March 1961 a production 500cc Velocette Venom Clubman set the 24-hour world record at a speed of 100.05 mph.
on mineral oil, lucas electrics, amal carb, and tubed tyres.
Food for thought!

It's not that a modern motercycle could not do it but that apparently no one wants to do it.
I know I can't stay up that late.

Ahh, it's the 500cc 24hr record that stands not the motorcycle record, which was beaten a few weeks after the Velocette's run...... Still 'beating the record' on a 90's 500cc two smoker would be a pretty hollow victory, not like doing it on a velocette in a pudding basin helmet at all!
It is perfectly possible to ask for facts without telling someone they're 'talking rubbish'.... Everytime someone posts what they consider to be an interesting fact do they really need to publish a reading list at the same time? This ain't a scientific journal!

I learned a long time ago of the utter futility in trying to affect someone's religious beliefs by using facts. The reason is, facts are logical and beliefs emotional. Those two parts of the brain never communicate with one another so presenting such a person with a fact that conflicts with their preconceptions will have no effect whatsoever.

The description in the article provided some great background on describing what an accomplishment it was.
In that day and age on that equipment, damn impressive. Thanks for sharing.

I refuse to believe that St Helens exists and furthermore BruceP is a figment of his own imagination.Don't confuse me with facts , I've already made my mind up .

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
