Hi Cromey
I live in the UK, and 52 and planning with my husband to do a 1 year trip from Argentina to Alaska on 650ccs, including off road. The whole travel insurance thing is complicated. I came across this
https://boughtbymany.com/news/articl...nce/#motorbike which was a good start.
The following information covers travel and medical insurance, whilst travelling on a bike (i.e. it's not insurance for the bike)
I got quotes from Navigator Travel, Trailfinders and Worldwideinsure. They all resell the Voyager motorcycle policy. I explored the gold option, which on the surface seems good. It covers off road, and has no cc restrictions. BUT. i have received conflicting advice about 3rd party liability - some say it does NOT cover damage caused whilst riding the bike (which seems stupid to me), whilst others said it did. AND, there was some conflict of advice about whether I'd be covered if riding my motorcycle above 1000m - if I start adding activity packs that cover altitude, it adds literally £000s. Mexico City, for example, is already above 1,000m alt. The standard price for 2 people in their 50s for worldwide cover was £1,990 (what all those restrictions)
I also got a quote from Holiday safe, which is underwritten by AXA. The policy is similar to the ones above, but it DOES cover 3rd party liability whilst actually riding the bike (I will triple check). And I don't know yet about altitude. Until last week, the equivalent of 'gold' above was £1,500 ish. BUT, since last week, that worldwide cover has now shot up to £4,500 because Mexico is deemed a problem by the insurer. so if you exclude Mexico, it seems a good deal. I'm going to explore whether I could take out Mexico cover for the 3-4 weeks we might be there, and then use their standard worldwide policy the rest of the trip.
I have to say, it's well worth reading the small print. And the phone sales people often just don't know the answers.
Oh, and I also explored the US providers such as RIPCORD etc as advertised on the horizons site, but it seems that since GDPR they aren't taking on any new business from travellers based in the UK.
I'd welcome any other advice from readers doing the transamerican thing.
