BMW K1600 GT...any previous or current owners..???

Hello HU think pool, any current or past owners of the K16gt please let me know your thoughts. Thinking of getting one to replace my GS12 for my road going antics. Please no weight comments...!!!

Here we go.....my friend has owned a 12 plate gt for about five years and has done around 20k miles on it . Engine bar wise Heed is the way to go . Make sure all the electrical switches work . Make sure u keep the radiator clean and change the coolant as they can run very hot . Fuel consumption is mid to high 40s on a trip . Learn how to properly check the oil level as it has a dry sump and there is a certain way to do it. He uses B32 tyres on it and the wear is surprisingly good . If u can get one with the reverse gear then its a help . He loves the bike and other then a knackered battery.....his fault.....it has never gone wrong . Sounds fantastic when trashed in a tunnel !!
If I fitted one I'd buy one in a heartbeat.........that said the Gs will destroy it in tight twistys......but for everything else it is the business .

Of course you could alway slide the K75 engine out and shoehorn the K16 in.

Forgot to say that if u r changing the oil urself.....it has two drain plugs.......the first one is in the usual place the second is inside the sump effectively above the drain hole..........a little bit of grease helps when refitting it , u will see why when u do it

I've never owned one but I've spent many years servicing and fixing them in the main dealers.

They are a great bike to ride. Such speed and power. Very comfortable and packed full of features.

But like any technology loaded BMW, they are prone to finicky faults and problems.

My advice is to get one with a warranty. And make sure you can extend the warranty. BMW do their own used bike warranty.

Fixing a 1600 out of warranty can really bankrupt you. NOTHING is affordable on it.

Older models used year around are very prone to clogged radiators and overheating. Check carefully. £850 for a new one plus hours of labour.

Adaptive headlights fail too. £2000 !!

As always, the simpler the model, the better.

Great advice I might look at bmw warranty before this trip. I didn't want to do it on my 06 gsa bit long in the tooth for such a journey. High tech = failure crazy world we are in..

I only recently sold my 2006 R1200GS.

It's the most reliable BMW I've ever owned. By far better made and more reliable than a K1600. The generation of BMW's that the engineers had more say than the marketing department. I only sold it as I've had to move and id run out of space.

I'd do the usual checks on the GS (shaft, RWD etc) and take that.

I'm not sure if you have the K1600 or are going to buy one. I know the ones with reverse had problems. We had those apart quite often. Switch gears fail more than they should too.

I bought a 13plate no reverse. My GS has a few snags at moment so I'm hesitant to use it for this trip. First impressions are good but I always listen to good advice and heed them especially folk in the trade with a few years behind them...

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
