Drone Control
Just guessing, but the video seems to suggest that a "Dick Tracy" style
control unit is strapped to the wrist. Therefore, the operator controls the drone, or a third party, using the control unit, controls the drone, leading or following.

Actually, I think it's designed to follow the tracking device rather than being manually controlled. Cool toy...

Tracking?

How does that work? How does the operator command the drone to start,
change and stop? I think my brother is buying one -he says it costs only $499.00 US. Don't know if that includes camera or not.

If he does buy one, I will brief here.

Any techies out there HELP!

taking deposits now but not due until 2016 I believe, but great for lone travellers who want to record themselves.

Just ab word of warning about these devices... They look and sound amazing. I ordered a similar start up companies version (airdroid's pocket drone) paid £350 for it .. it arrived when they said it would 8 weeks later.. Crashed (not heavily) on first test flight and broke the tail rotor off... I contacted them, but got no reply.. Since seen several youtube video's citing the fact that it is very unstable... No way of getting spare parts and yesterday I received an email saying the company have ceased trading.

Like you I was intrigued by the possibility of a drone following a GPS signal and the ability to film from the air. The pocket drone was small folded up and might have been a good idea, but the remote controller to fly it was just too big for me to justify carrying it onmy bike (obviously less of an issue for vans and trucks)

But my point is - if you want to get one.. Go for a company with a proven track record and proven flight capability...

Parrot Bebopp? might be a better option- look it up

I was interested in one of these, but when I was reading about it some guy was saying that it doesn't have 'eyes', meaning that it can't recognise obstacles in its path such as trees, bridges etc. If this is true, it's use would be limited to wide open spaces I guess.

I'd guess there's going to be a lot of drone footage showing up in travel videos in the near future as one way or another people are going to be taking them along on trips.

Even I've been looking at whether it's feasible for a bike trip I'm doing in the autumn but I've been wondering about the practicalities of size, fragility, effort vs reward, legal hurdles etc. Out in the desert - climbing sand dunes, showing how far it is to nowhere, coming over the rise to a campsite, that kind of thing should be ok but there are more and more places where launching a drone seems like a quick way to an interview with the police. Given how tough an environment bike travel is are any of them sturdy enough to survive or is some vital part going be broken the minute you take it out of the box?

I've recieved a report today of a traveller entering Morocco having their bags searched and a drone found followed by extensive visit to the local police and confiscation of the drone, gopro cameras and other equipment.

I'm trying to find out more as it is unsubstantiated at present

As with any recording equipment, using them in sensitive areas will obviously get you into trouble, although at the Moroccan border stashed in your kit (as aginst being used) seems a bit harsh!!

Use it to film yourself crossing no mans land into mauri and you can expect to get lifted!!

It's not that long ago though the same was done with GPS. Imagine, turning up to a third world country with something like that in your kit, with all these drone strikes going on around the world. They have probably never seen one used for civillian purposes and the notion of people owning them will be completely outside their sphere of comprehension.

You will look dodgy!

Yep, when I was in Zagora last October a french overlander was using one outside to film the garage we were in. After a while two smart chaps arrived wearing suits and carry radios, after a short chat the french gentleman was escorted to the police station along with his drone. I left before he returned.

Todays report seems a little odd based on previous experinece so I wonder if it happened at the airport after luggage scans rather than at a port. I've asked the OP for more information and will pass it on if I find out anything else.

We were flying one a couple of weeks ago, of a similar size to the one in the video, in the grounds of where I work. When it got to within a certain distance from a wind turbine that we have it went out of control and just continued flying slowly towards the turbine blades. Plenty of sweat for about a minute, as they're expensive, until it just crash landed of its own accord. It must have been picking up some signal, and I wonder in what other circumstances could a similar thing happen.
Mind you - the sorts of places that people on this site get to, there's probably not much in terms of stray signals about.

Yep - Another reason for not bringing mine apart from the space issues and the fact its broken (lol) was the thought of crossing the Kazakhstan and Russian borders with it ... I seriously dont think it would have been possible.
