But does this really account for the increased incidence of gastro-intestinal complaints? I find it hard to believe.
In my experience I have only had such complaints in countries where hygiene standards are very poor - either through low standards of personal hygiene among the population, or poor sanitation and drinking water supply, these are countries such as India, Nepal, Afghanistan or Uzbekistan.
But in countries very nearby with similar climates but where hygiene standards are much higher, such as Iran, Syria or Kazakhstan, I have never had such complaints.
I still believe it is overwhelmingly due to standards of personal hygiene and sanitation.
