Absolutely, there's loads of words in common use here that would get you in trouble in Central/South/Caribbean America ... heck there's several old-fashioned women's names that are considered swearwords in other countries

Some people get very easily offended. If I put my mind to it, I could (pretend to) be offended by everything I see/ hear/ read/ feel. My life would get rather one dimensional pretty quickly.

If there's an 18+ age limit on the page, humanly intelligent human mods can censor genuinely deliberately offensive/ racist language etc. along with the usual spam/ irrelevant stuff.

Claiming that everyone is too busy and you should suck up your 2+ day automated Jap, Muff and fanny (pack) FB jail time, is an excellent way of making people vote with their feet to go elsewhere.

A LOT of the issue is country of origin - words in A are NOT acceptable in B etc.
Case in point: "fanny pack" in North America is perfectly normal and acceptable as a name for a waist pack. I was mortified to discover what it meant in UK. How do you moderate that?
Any human who isn't a complete half wit would know how to moderate it... If the discussion is regarding bags, it's ok. If it's clearly regarding a part of the female anatomy, it's not. If you don't have enough "intelligent" humans and are relying on artificially retarded (also not an ok word...) computer algorithms, then good luck!

Employ more "normal" humans? Divide them by their linguistic/ tech/ geographical etc knowledge? Start off by not accepting any FB contributions not in English, unless you have native speaking Germans/ Spanish/ Italian/ French etc. as mods

I know that was a rhetorical question but I'll give my 2p's worth. Some words are aggressive and/or offensive in any version of the English language and we all know that. But some words either have innocuous meanings or are such mild swears that it's ridiculous to pick up on those. To use your own example, "Fanny" has different meanings in English and American vernacular, and it's also a perfectly valid name in Europe. We are all grownups here and don't need to be treated like small children in the company of a maiden aunt to spare her an attack of the vapours. My opinion is your keyword list needs to be seriously revisited - even if only to decline a post rather than sin-bin the poster. And if you don't have time to do that I'm happy to volunteer my services. IMHO in a healthy forum people shouldn't have to be walking on eggshells.

Ok, who is going to pay a real person to sit at a computer all day to moderate the HU FB page and do all the background checks for new members?

There are currently already 3 admins and 6 moderators on HU FB. I presume they're volunteers. Click on the "About" button in the FB app. It isn't just GJ on his own.

Yes, and if each of them does, say, 3 hours of volunteer work* for the page per week how many more hours of coverage are needed?

*which IMO is a lot for a FB page, rather than something more concrete like this site

A decent data set of "rude" words would go a huge way towards not needing extra people. Tomkat already offered his services to help improve the clearly substandard gibberish of the existing data set. Should the system still flag something up, send it to "approval by mod needed" rather than immediately banning the 98% innocuously not really/ typo "rude" word users, that'll already be a lot less once the data set has been purged of the garbage.

I'm sure GJ would easily find further HU FB mods should they be necessary too.

It's very easy for HU FB to get a reputation for a place worth swerving or just to look at pictures, rather than to contribute to.

For one of the Fb pages I admin / mod that's exactly what I've had to do this week. Two of the posts that needed approval were typos and came from our 'leader' - the bloke who set the page up in the first place. Three strikes and he's banned I think

Further to all this, as I wrote in reply to an email on this subject:

...FB - we have two active mods - we spend about 3-4 hours a day every day as is. We block HUNDREDS of potential scammers / spammers a day - manually, one by one. EVERY ONE has to be looked at manually, checking their comment if they're nice enough to put in a comment that's obviously a problem it's easy, but often there's an innocuous comment that could be legit, and they agree to rules etc - ALL has to be checked. If we turn off the rules we'd be swamped and overwhelmed... AND we don't want to auto block legit riders.

I'm currently struggling with "bad words" list, but it's a nightmare. So far, it seems every bad word is supposed to be entered one at a time., No csv list etc. Current possible list - 2700 words. Oops, they only allow 1000. No they don't tell you what words they use. No there is no "allow this word" list.

Solutions:
1. Take HU FB private. Many other groups I know of have done this recently. Much less scams/ spam. Much less work for mods.

2. If only 2 mods of 9 (3 plus 6)! are active, then those that aren't, need replacing. People here have volunteered.

3. Sort out your bad word list. Whether it's a 1000 or 2700. Someone here has volunteered.

I feel like a management consultant!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
