Letting go
I have been spending a TON of hours getting ready to leave for a LONG time on an around the world motorcycle trip. Been watching vids on bike maintenance, what kind of bike to get, panniers, GPS, weather gear....on and on - and having a blast doing it. My plan is to hit the road May 24 2021 - ride to Newfoundland - cross into Labrador - cross Canada, head up to Alaska, the straight south into South America. This is all the easy stuff - let me tell ya - letting go of my life here is way more difficult. I have clients to take care of , dear friends who I will miss, family.....I did not expect this difficulty - but the road calls, and this adventure has revitalized my life.....

Letting go - the hardest lesson for some of us to learn.

I'll be going a 5-6 month journey this year and I wondered how I'd manage life on the road. So, I did a 5 week trip last year, a little tester and tryout of the bike and gear to boot. Turns out it was all right. I was able to call in on friends along the way, and made new friends too. On longer trips I understand it's not uncommon to hook up with other travellers and ride together for a while. Even when I was alone, I was never bored, that's the great thing about travel, always something to do.

Once you've cut that umbilical you'll wonder why you never did it before.

Just another idea: You don't have to go around the world in one continuous trip. You can do it in stages. Especially true if you have family, wife & kids, etc. In stages it becomes a lifestyle that can last a decade or a lifetime. Why cram it in to just one/two/three years of your life?

At the same time, prior to leaving internationally and even to less distant destinations, I always have a bit of angst towards leaving. Many if not most travelers experience the same. That's why you set a date, buy your tickets, and do the preparations you cannot turn back on; and then go. However you pursue your dream, letting go is part of the transition.

Everyone is different as far as this goes. I went to a presentation by a guy who planned to go RTW with his wife - after a year he Missed his family, friends and home life so went home, his wife loved it and carried on.
Like Hack says, travel can be broken up into lots of trips - that way you can do just the good bits and leave out any tedious journeys in between.
Sometimes one long trip can work out better for your career but I know people that ride for 3 weeks every summer, leave their bikes then push further on the following year.
Good luck with your trip - stay flexible, there are no hard and fast rules

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
