RIP Alastair Farland

Alistair was a 24 year old Aussie doing the Pan American from top to bottom and had been on the road just 2 months. He was one of us.

His blog is light on words but has some terrific photos of his travels. My daughter was all set to meet up with him in Mexico and ride together for a few weeks - what a pointless, tragic loss.

He was killed in North Carolina by another vehicle - I have very few details at this stage.

Hi Jax,
A tragedy in itself, but even worse when so close to home. I`m sure I speak for many in sending my support to the ``boss`` at this difficult time.

John.

I just had a look at his blog, there is some great photos on it.
He has a statement there from his friends, a bit of a bad omen.

Hi everyone.

I'm a former work colleague of Alistair's. The tragic news is just filtering through back home now.

Al was a terrific 'kid'. I can start with the superlatives but wouldn't know where to end.

He will be missed by many. And when I say many, I mean countless....

If there is any more information you could post, that would be terrific. PM's are fine if you see the need.

Thanks for your post(s) and stay safe in your own travels.

All the best from AU.

dan..

We met initially at OX and then I had the privilege to not only ride with but also host Al for a few days the week before the accident. I found him to be a thoughtful and fun loving young man who still possessed the ability to wonder at the world. Over the grill, our plates, and a bottle or two; we invested a lot of time talking and sharing about life, death, love, fear, loss, discovery, and how those things work in our own lives and in our relationships with others.

Al had the very rare ability to convince me to care about him. The days we spent together and the conversations we shared are treasures to me. Alistair remains one in a million and he left me better than he found me.

I think yes. Al's death is sad and came way too soon, but he chose to make his life adventurous. He brought joy and wonder to those he met. He helped spread the value of travel and meeting new people and learning about them and sharing about oneself.

A person with a spirit like Alistair's shouldn't be confined to a cubicle or a timeclock. They should be welcomed out into the world.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
