Serious error made
Out on a little trip at moment but held up for a day or so while the wife gets over some food poisoning, which happens..... We are in Spain at the moment and somehow ended up in Benidorm! A very serious error. She just could not go on any further but what a place! It is everything we hate. All of Britains finest are here too.
Food poisoning in remote areas with no facilities is unpleasant but you get by, done it twice. My wife feels quite bad but can't wait to get out of here!

I don't know what Benidorm is ... but if it's so bad ... why not just move out?Put her in a Taxi, go to a better place! (put a diaper on her for the ride over)

I've been all over Spain on several trips, had a great time. I stayed away from the resorts frequented by Brits, Russians and others. There are other options.

Try Lomotil for serious digestive disorders. I think you may be able to buy it over the counter there. It's also a form of Paragoric, but don't think it's regulated. Keep her well hydrated above all.

TIP: many travelers get so called "food poisoning". Common, even in 1st world countries. It's probably not food poisoning, just a different bacterial mix your system is not used to. Worst case would be she has amebic dysentery,
which may require antibiotics. (unlikely)

If it was truly food poisoning then every customer in the restaurant would likely be sick. In a week or two of eating local food/drink most adjust and no longer have digestive trauma.

I got sick in every Latin American country, one after the other, as I headed South from Mexico to Bolivia ... all but Argentina. I suspect the reason I was spared in Argentina was use of modern pesticides used there.

She will be weak for a 3 or 4 days. Keep Drinking Water!! (not Beer!)

In my glib perspective, the squirts is my body adjusting to new intestinal flora; copious vomiting is a sure sign of food poisoning.

In the FWIW department: paregoric is morphine. Lomotil contains a synthetic opioid, not morphine. Both are narcotics, and can therefore get you into trouble. Lomotil apparently contains a substance which does uncomfortable things to your heartbeat if you take too much--designed to prevent opioid abuse.

Any opioid or opiate will tend to make you constipated, but IMO that's like using an elephant gun on a mosquito. There are non-narcotic remedies available almost anywhere you go.

15 seconds of Google research suggests that Lomotil is no longer sold in England, and probably not available in Spain either. In the States it's prescription only.

Yea, Lomotil is probably no longer popular now and is by prescription in US, but it does work pretty well if you don't take too much. I still have it in my travel kit 30 years on. Opiate based products, IMO, can be good.

They Work in life and death situations where dehydration can (and will) kill you. Pissing away your life out your arsehole is not an option. If it's illegal, so what? Go to a Doc, have him write a script for it, or something better.

Worst symptom I found was constipation for a day or two if you take too much.
It's STRONG and FAST ... I start with a 1/2 tab ... and go up from there. I take Lomotil prophylactically along with Pepto, another out of date remedy that doesn't work.

Lomotil was sold over the counter in many countries in Latin America. Crossed dozens of borders worldwide with it, never a question.
"What's this for?" It''s for diarrhea". End of inquiry.

What are your "helpful" recommendations among prescription or over the counter remedies ... that you have tried ... that actually work?

Imodium works for me. When Imodium has not worked, it's been because I had either giardia or amoebas. In both cases the cure is metronidazole or its equivalents, and no amount of opioid is going to do any good.

Are you really saying that you take Lomotil "prophylactically," i.e., as a preventative measure, in advance of any symptoms?

There are countries which come down hard on travelers possessing any form of narcotic, including some of the Arab countries and some in Central Asia. That's worth keeping in mind when handing out advice to overland travelers. Not everyplace is as lax as Latin America.

There is an amount of inexactitude between the words "food poisoning" and "feeling bad".
I do agree with earlier posts concerning food poisoning: a good friend of mine died of just that, quite a few years ago, acquired in a UK restaurant.

Ah yes....Benidorm. The budget holiday's magnet destination for lager-louts. I feel for you.
But please..... you are witnessing the scrapings of the barrel of British holidaymakers. Most of us are rather more civilised. :-)
