Taking a motorcycle into Japan by ferry
Hi:

I Am researching taking my 650CC VStrom from Vladivostok to Korea and on into Japan this next summer (2017). After exploring Japan by motorcycle for a month, I plan to ship the bike by AirCanada to North America and then ride it home to Illinois. For Japan, I think I simply need a carnet and an International Drivers License translated into Japanese, a copy of the ownership papers for the bike, and insurance which I can get from a motorcycle shop once in Japan. Does anyone know anything more about this? Does anyone know if I will need something else once in Japan for the bike?

Thanks for any help, suggestions or information you can give me.

You need to have your carnet 'authenticated' by JAF, the automobile association.
A translation of your home country license is only needed for countries not part of the 1949 Convention on Road Traffic. The USA (I see you are from Illinois, so assuming you have US license) is part of that, so you only need your IDP.
The ferry to Hakata/Fukuoka is your best bet if coming from Busan, Korea because there is a JAF office there. If you take the one to Shimonoseki, you will have to take a train to Fukuoka to go to JAF.

I entered in Japan from Sakhaline by ferry without any carnet and managed to have a temporary import permit with customs. It was 3 years ago . So it is possible
.
I had only my French registration papers and my driving licence . Good luck !

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
