I read it differently, twice.
The main themes of the book are:-
1. Quality; the nature of quality and the philosophy of why it is so difficult to achieve.
2. Education: as practiced in the USA all those years ago and now exported to the UK in more recent times and what an utter lack of quality exists therein.
3. Father-son bonding: covered in various guises throughout the chapters.
4. Motorcycle riding and maintenance: as per the title.
Some years later Persig wrote another book on the theme of morals (without a motorcycle theme as far as I know - I have not managed to read much of that book).
