Surely it is just a question of volume (and I don't mean the tank capacity )
The product range and the market for long distance motorcycling is very much niche and the costs are unavoidably high when serving a small market.
With product liability laws and so on, it is simply not feasible for a proper manufacturer to put onto the market anything that has not been properly designed, tested and proved safe. Especially if that product has to hold 30 litres of highly flammable liquid 5 centimetres away from a boiling hot piece of metal that is bouncing hard over corrugations at 60mph.
Its alright for an individual to bodge it up, not a well established company like Acerbis

Linzi, yep those tanks look good, even if I use it for water :-)
Dan, took the plunge mate after realising that the Strom was far too heavy for me.
So we should be in Mongolia for July, hopefully will catch each other and have a few

Nice Find.
Hi, but all credit to Pumpy who mentioned the slim tank in her thread about bike preparation and her South American trip. Heck though, it took a lot of searching to find they're available just up the road from me! Lindsay.

Well maybe Im tight when it comes to money lol
I have a standard 10l tank.. about 120miles range.. so I think it will be a case of keeping my eye on fleebay or rig up some spare cans somewhere.
Our RTW trip takes us thru Europe and usual Stans, russia and south Korea and then onwards towards the Americas
Anyways, lots of other peoples thoughts

They sometimes come up on flea bay (assuming its the same as an xt tank).
If not strap a gallon can on the back of the bike.
Glad to see you have gone for a TT-R/XT lookalike though. Might see you on some of the better Stans/Mongolian roads next year now!

Guys, why are you looking all with the small money?Oh yeah buy an aftermarket tank(more liters) for less money then the smaller OEM part?????Check what is the current price for it.
I payd also for my 40 liters XR 650L tank back in 94 around 900 dollars. So what,I still have it mounted and don´t regret it.No rust inside no dents etc.
The travellers life its not easy. Most of the times comes cheaper. But not all the time.Invest or not is your choice!!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
