Does the world really need yet another motorcycle chain oiler?
Apparently I thought so once upon a time. At the time, Scottoiler's electronic oiler was selling for $500. Being an engineer, I figured, I could do it for a few bucks. Well, fast-forward 5-6 years, several thousand dollars and many hours of banging my head against the wall later, I've got what I wanted - cheap and simple oiler that just works.
After five iterations of trying and testing various options, I settled on the current design with the following features:
- Simple, 1 button, 1 LED, interface;
- Robust motion detection of moving (oil dispensed ONLY when bike is being ridden);
- Sturdy design for the toughest riding conditions a dual sport rider will encounter;
- Oil reservoir lasts up to 4,000 miles (7,000 km);
- Low power design (oiler can be connected to the battery for months without draining it).
A few friends and I have been testing the oiler for several years now. In the last two years, I have used the latest version of the oiler on three long rides:
Southern Africa,
South America and
Europe (over 60,000 miles total) and it kept my chains properly lubed.
I have about 15 units from a pre-production run available for sale at basically the cost of parts and labor - $50. I am hoping to get a constructive feedback from buyers. I am really interested in what is NOT good about the current design and how to make it better.
Accompanying website explains features, use, details of the design (electronics, plumbing, etc), history of the development and tests done.
