For Sale: Regional Bgan Hughes 9101
1 used Regional Bgan Inmarsat IP modem. Hughes 9101
Worked great through South America for last year. Got us rescued while broken down in southern Bolivia. Landhopping dot com. Thank goodness for such technology.
It connects to your laptop and allows you to get email, access to the web and we used it a lot to make Skype calls too.
Needs new RBGAN SIM from France Telecom for service access.
Speed: 144kbps upload/ 144 kpps download
Weight: 6.6 lbs (smaller in size than laptop)
Connection: Ethernet, USB or Bluetooth.
Coverage: not North America.
I'll ship anywhere you tell me how to, as long as you pay for it.
Make me offers. I'll e-mail photos on request.

how does it work?
Hello there,
can I ask you how it works?
Do you need to subscribe for internet access or it's like a GPS, once you bought the machine you just use the satellites?
I had a quick google search but all the results are too technical for me at 2.30am on Monday.
Thank you for your time.

Inmarsat
Here's the basics Alex:-
Inmarsat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Satellite based, so gets through when there is no other network available; North Pole/South Pole for example!!
But, historically, very expensive.
I don't know about the particular modem and yarglien will want to answer any detailed questions.

How it works.
It works very simply.
You connect your laptop to the unit, either by usb cable, ehternet cable or wirelessly via Bluetooth.
The program on the laptop tells you which direction to point the device and what angle to raise it too.
The signal level is cotinually displayed and once you have optimized it as best you can you are good to go. Take a few minutes for initial set up.
It is the same as being on cable connection. You have an IP address and you can surf away on the Internet, send and receive emails and make skype or VoIP calls anywhere you want.
You pay for the service (read SIM card activation) so you can be connected all the time if you like - we were paying less than $40/month plus additional charges for data throughput. Best to research on the web for best prices.
Hope this makes sense.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
