Document Backups
Worried about having both your original documents and your copies lost or destroyed on your great trip?
Then you should conscider scaning your documents and have them converted to PDF. Then, before you go on your trip, e-mail them to your own personal hotmail account, or another personal Internet accessible e-mail account, or store them in some other Internet accessible storage. If you loose your documents on a trip, or need copies sendt quickly to someone, find a place with internet access and a printer, then voila!

PDF v. JPG?
I am currently keeping mine as jpegs on my phone (the scans of credit card size documents like a UAE driving licence and vehicle registration fit very nicely in the phone’s screen).
Can anyone think of any relative merits of either PDF or JPEG? The JPEG file sizes are not significant.

PDF document format is designed to contain text and pictures. Your scans are pictures only. So, if you put the picture inside a PDF all you achieve is make it bigger. Plus, Acrobat Reader is bloat-ware, means it takes a long time to load.
Put your scans in JPG files.
However, I encrypt all sensitive documents with PGP.

Is there a free encryption software on the web (not full of ad/spyware)?

PGP is free to download on line.
I keep my backups on a USB flash drive in a waterproof tube - never let it out of my sight.

Thanks XRM!
You mean the one from this website: http://www.pgpi.org/
I kept going to www.pgp.com and that was just 30 day free trial version.
Cheers

The free version of PGP was always well hidden on their web page. Now it seems to have vanished...
There is also http://www.gnupg.org/

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
