How do people finance their travelling??
Hi.
I am planning a first time long trip around australia and south america. I was just wondering, how do people finance such trips. The cost must be astronomical so how do normal people with normal jobs/debts/responsibilities do this ?? I hear stories of people being on the road for 5 years, how do they pay for fuel, shipping , living etc...
Somebody please explain this to me

1. Save up for years.
2. Sell any property you have to finance the trip.
3. Rent out any property you have to provide a regular income.
I think this question has been asked & answered several times before, check out "Travellers Questions That Don't Fit Anywhere Else" further down.

We are about to leave...
We have sold the house, cars etc and are putting all of our stuff in to storage. Just at the moment we are lucky as we bought in a low market and have made a pretty hefty profit. Some of that is paying for our trip.
But, that is the way to go in my view - the last thing you want are ties etc dragging you back when you want to be going forward!!!

Hi,
I'm planning leaving for a year or so in the new year. I will be remortgaging my flat and renting it out during my absence to help pay that mortgage. (Long live the British Housing Boom!) I also have two credit cards!
Matt
PS- A tent and a cheap motorcycle helps too!

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
