So we redirected to Santiago de Chile, where clearance cost US$40 and took about an hour. Just be sure to have plenty of copies of your documents! And siesta is taken very seriously in the air-fright customs-clearance business... Also, the nearest fuel station was then about 4km away and a nightmare of roadworks to reach.
The warehouse guys were happy to dispose of our custom-made steel shipping crate and were incredibly helpful - typical of Chileans generally, we found!

Thanks for that. Info we got from BA customs agent was US$1200, but I can't get that confirmed. Looking forward to Chile, eventually
