Colombian president ends peace talks
February 21st, Associated Press
"Bogota — The Colombian military began aerial bombardment of a vast rebel territory early Thursday, following the President's decision to cancel peace talks and reclaim the region, the military reported.
President Andres Pastrana declared Colombia's three-year peace process over Wednesday night, just hours after rebels hijacked a domestic airliner and abducted a senator travelling on the flight. Mr. Pastrana set a midnight deadline for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to abandon the zone in southern Colombia.
Military warplanes and helicopters bombed "85 strategic points within the zone" overnight and the operation was continuing, armed forces spokeswoman Consuelo Garcia told Associated Press on Thursday."
All travellers in the area be extra careful, and seek alternative routes if possible.
