Current security situation Thailand-Malaysia?

Hi,

I am traveling overland UK to Australia (http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/skillington/)

I am considering flying bike and us from Nepal to Thailand and traveling onto KL, before flying onto Australia. I notice the Aus Government website currently advises to "reconsider all travel" in southern Thailand near border with Malaysia due to terrorist bomb attacks. But these government warnings are always excessively conservative. So does anyone have real local information and advice about the safety of current travel in this area?

Regards
John

safe on west side

use the border crossing at Bukit Kayu Hitam on the west side. safe here.
security arrangements may be stricter but nothing to worry about, they are basically looking out for thai insurgents.

Cool west is safe

Hi,

I agree. If you stay away from the south-east there should be no problem. Just don't hang around to long and stay away from obvious targets like schools, police-station's, gouverment-buildings etc.

Thanks for the info Maarten & Norman, I am currently in Nepal and considering options that include
1. fly Nepal to Thailand, ride Thailand/Cambodia/Malaysia, fly KL to Australia
2. fly Nepal to Thailand, ride Thailand/Cambodia, fly Thailand to Aus
3. fly Nepal to Aus

I need to make a decision in next few days so any updates appreciated.

Thanks
John

Thumbs up it's all good

I reckon you should ride through Myanmar - wish I had chosen that option in hindsight.

Should be no problems through Thai/Malasia border, just don't hang around sightseeing on Thai side

Happy travels

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
