After talking to 101 Insurance companies for medical and belongings cover I hit upon Navigator Travel Insurance. These guys are actually human!

Their Diamond Policy (by Avon)covers everything 'we' need for upto 18 months which can then be extended for a further 18 months thereafter = a total of 3 years cover.

Liability while riding the bike isn't covered but if its manditory in the country your going through it can be purchased at the border. However, liability while not on the bike is covered. You are covered for injury to yourself while riding the bike though and there is no restriction on engine size etc. Belongings are covered on the bike and covered to a reasonable ££. They are not the cheepest but they are the best by far for level of cover that I found. Cost me £600 for 18 months inc USA and Canada. (Mind you I was quoted £1700 (one thousand seven hundred) by Club Direct for 12 months cover so maybe its cheep!!)They will insure all EC people (but not US and Canada citizens).

If you have had a pre-existing medical condition, provided it is under control they will still insure you without penalties or exclusions as well.

All seems too good to be true but I've read the policy 3 times in great detail to make sure of the above and its for real. Haven't had to claim yet though so can vouch for that process.
