Troubles in Nepal

Current situation in Nepal.

The Maoist ceasefire has ended with a vengeance and plenty of trouble within the Kathmandu valley itself. Big attack in Thangkot (10k west of KTM) the other day - 11 police killed. Plenty of gun battles going on too.

Situation liable to deteriorate up 'til elections on 8th Feb. Curfew currently in the valley from 10pm to 4 am.

Travel bandh (strike) from 5th to 9th of Feb is planned so if you're planning on arriving from India do it before or after the bandh. You risk getting your motorcycle burned otherwise....

If stopped by Maoists and "taxed" - don't pay more than Rs500 - about US$7.

Western tourists/volunteers haven't been troubled by Maoists yet but there's always the chance of being caught in the crossfire so take care.

Hi NB

Just read your message and am eager to know more as I'm Nepal bound. Are you based there?

In the last weeks of 6 month overland from the UK. Looks like the route is closing behind me...Turkey, Iran and now Nepal. Hmmm.

Latest info much appreciated.

Should be here for next 5 months.

Curfew yesterday and lots of political leaders arrested. Various shootings too.

Should quieten down after the elections. Still perfectly safe as a western overlander - nobody will bother you.

PM me if you want any info or advice.

Exclamation Problems in Nepal!!!!

Dear travellers,

we think it is not a good idea to come to Nepal at the current situation!!
We get stucked in Pokhara at Lakeside, where we, as tourists, still have no real problems.
We hope to continue to Kathmandu as soon as possible to leave the country to Thailand/Bangkok by plane!!

Post King yealds to population

Saw this

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4931000.stm

The Nepalese King seems to have conceeded to the populations demands....

Wonder how long it will take to calm things down?

The answer was - very quickly!

It took about one day.

It's all cool here now. The Maoists have announced a 3 month ceasefire and parliament has been reformed. There will be a constitutional reform and things SHOULD improve.

Roads are all open. Fuel is plentiful.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
