Breaking bike for parts

Can anyone summarise what paperwork is involved in buying a bike in the Uk, to break for parts? I presume the normal paperwork needs to be done for the sale, but how to I ensure that the DVLA are aware that the bike has been broken, so I don't get the nasty official letters regarding road tax, yada, yada, yada? The bike is already on a SORN (Statutory Off-Road Notification), so I have some time to play with, but I want to get it sorted before I forget about it!

Thanks.

Selling, scrapping or breaking a UK registered bike.

Buying
You need a UK address. The seller and you complete Section 6 of the V5 Registration Certificate. You both sign Section 8. He gives you Section 10 and he sends the rest off to DVLA. Within 2 or 3 weeks DVLA send you a new V5.This is the same if it is on a SORN or on the road.

Selling
If you sell/transfer a vehicle you complete Section 6 of your V5 Registration Certificate with the purchaser's details, sign Section 8 and get the buyer to sign here also. Give the buyer section 10 and send the rest to DVLA. Within a couple of weeks the DVLA will write confirming the transfer - and you are off the hook for Tax, SORN, NIPs, parking tickets - everything.

Breaking/Scrapping
For scrapping the simplest answer (and the one the DVLA would like) is to tick box 17, date box 18 in section 6 and sign Section 8 of the V5 and send it all to DVLA. Again it does not matter if the vehicle is on a SORN or was on the road. Again they will write confirming it is all over.
However this means that the frame (and its number) and the License Plate number would be no longer be transferrable should someone want an 'identity' or basic frame to rebuild as a registered road vehicle.

Hope this helps.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
