Any Android mobile phone that can run one of the navigation apps such as Mapsme or OSMand can be used as a replacement GPS. It doesn't need to work as a phone (or you don't need a working SIM card in it) of you download the App and the country specific map using wifi.
So unless your mobile phone is very old/ not a smart phone you should be able to use that. Just accept there is a bit of a learning curve as you get used to the app.
Good luck.

A cheap Android phone that can run apps should be very cheap, or you can use a Nuvi - a car GPS that works just fine, just not waterproof or hardened as well to vibration, so mount it carefully and plastic baggy it when needed. Nuvis can be very cheap at the bottom end.

I believe that having a new even cheap smartphone is as good as buying a replacement Garmin GPS. I would suggest you the Garmin Montana. Is a very good robust GPS used by many cyclists. Here in the UK is around £150 - £180 so quite sure that will be as expensive as a second-hand smartphone but at least the Montana is designed for your purpose and is new! Otherwise, you can look for the Garmin GPS MAP 73 or 78.
Hope this helps!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
