Crossing Siberia alone

Hi

Planning to ride from Vladivostok to Germany next August solo, any advice out there on how best to find accommodation along the road? Any tips on if pre booking hotels is possible? - Is camping safe or to be avoided. I have read plenty of books with plenty of riders who have made it solo, but in this communities experience (advice welcome) - is it best and safer to find a buddy or tour going that way?

Thanks for opinions

Hi

I did this route twice from Poland to Japan and back. You can camp everywhere in taiga, just drive left or right, you can stay in pensions (caled gostinica in russian). In western part of Siberia you can find also many motels and hotels.

In my country green card is for free. Those countries are part of green card system so I can visit without any costs.

Kinga Tanajewska did the Vladivostok run earlier this year and seemed to find it OK, but then she does seem to be pretty good at networking and finding places to stay/people to help. Personally I'd prefer to do it with a buddy but you certainly can do it solo if necessary.

You should be OK for weather in August, though the summer is coming to an end by then so be prepared for hard conditions on the higher roads. If you plan your daily mileages you could probably avoid the need for most of the rough camping and scabby little towns and aim for cities with real hotels.

Regarding Ukraine insurance you should be able to buy it at the border.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
