Filling gas bottles in Morocco / Senegal

We are right now travelling through Morocco heading south. Our stove runns on gas from a bottle. We now need to refill that bottle, but it turns out to be quite a problem. We have brought several different addapters to convert our Swedish bottle to both the French and English gas system.

The problem is that no one is refilling bottles of any kind. All bottles are sent to a big factory for refilling. Since it was pretty close to our route, we have actually visited this factory with no luck. Our next move will be to visit a fishing harbor to see if we can refill there, but I am not to optimistic.

Does anypne know if it is possible to refill gas bottles in Senegal? Or know any other way to refill a bottle? All inputs are welcome!

/Jörgen

Few years ago now, but there was no possibility of refilling our German bottles in Morocco so we bought a Moroccan swap bottle instead. I had bought the set of 4 adaptors for taking gas out (there is another set for filling) by mating the bottle to our German regulator. Even getting another swap bottle wasn't always straight forward as each area has its own coloured bottle with different stampings and a couple of times I had to sweeten the deal by 20D before they would take the out of area bottle.

BTW it is almost entirely butane so don't expect your heater to work once temperature gets below 5C unless your gas locker is heated

Hope Africa isn't as bad as South America where I carry this kit plus a few other bits and pieces so I can refill my bottles from the local ones

Yes, you need propane for low temperatures. It's possible to get 'straight through' adapters for many bottle types and you can then connect a full and empty bottle and at least transfer half of the contents.

Gaslow is a major supplier in the UK of gas bits and bobs, maybe this PDF will tell you what you need.

It's easy to buy propane in Spain and I bought a Jumbo Adapter as a 'straight-through' adapter for the big Spanish bottles.

Tony LEE,
Thanks for your reply! Interesting reading.

Peter and Patricia,
In an marina in Agadir we found a gasbottle which fitted one of our adapters. So we for the last month we have used that one instead. It has now run out and today we bought two new ones. They are quite common in Senegal and there were no problem finding new ones. We still have the Swedish bottle but plan on leaving it on this camping, since all the christmas stuff makes our car a Little crowded;-
