Getting the latest news on the road (from the BBC)
The BBC News website is my source of international news both at home and when I'm on the road - all the 'indexes' have RSS feeds and with a bit of thinking ahead I can build myself a nice collection of feeds that keep me informed.
But it an be quite difficult to work out where exactly the BBC has correspondents etc... I've just found this via the BBC's backstage project ( backstage.bbc.co.uk :: Front Page :: |)
BBC Correspondents Map
It's been put together by a chap called Stuart Pinfold based on the beebs feeds and api's - I quite like it!
m
(for full disclosure I do think this is amazing and it's not advertising even if I do happen to run backstage)

Just looking at getting a new radio (got any tips?) can I get away with short wave only or do I need LW too. There is a reasonable looking and priced Sony with LW but it is quite big and the smaller portables only have SW.

I bought a kaito .. it is small and has a lock switch so it won't turn on in the panniers. But there are others around - google 'PLL short wave pocket' (PLL = phase locked loop) Possibly an old model now - but there are now more here
Amazon.com: Kaito Pocket-Size PLL Synthesized AM/FM Shortwave Radio, KA11: Electronics
Teh one I got may not have the best reception sensitivity.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
