Import motorbike from S.Africa to UK

Hi all.....
Can anyone tell me if it's possible / easy to have a BMW motorbike exported from S.Africa and re-plated in UK.

Thanks alot for any answers.

All the best.

Dave.

I'm 99% sure you could

Dave,

I see no reason why not.
I've imported several vehicles into the UK, and it's not nearly as difficult as you might think.

If the bike was never sold in the UK (ie. a grey import), then there's a good chance you'd have to put it through an MSVA test, but this isn't a big deal.
The last bike I MSVA'd failed on the fuel cap protruding too much, but a new cap fixed that.

Send me an email if you're struggling and I'm happy to try and help.
What's the bike?

Hi Zen..
Thanks for the reply.
The bike is a 2002 1150GS. It's in particularly good condition with low k's.
I know the S.A authorities are a bit strict with regards importing vehicles into S.Africa, but i'm not sure about exporting. I'll have to do a bit of research.

Thanks for your offer of help. If i go ahead with this that would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Dave

I assume this is for long term in use in the UK rather than for a tour?

Unless you are particularly emotionally attached to this bike, then given the price differential between bikes in South Africa and the UK and the shipping costs, I would suggest selling the bike in SA, buying an equivalent in the UK and pocketing the change. Although I appreciate if the rand keeps declining this becomes less attractive.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
