Unless you're planning on doing technical off-road, I wouldn't rule out a simple Japanese 125cc work bike (CG125, GN125 and YBR125). These are extremely common in South America, affordable, but highly reliable and easy to get parts for. I've been travelling on a CG125 for 5 months in Africa, and it handles the dirt "roads" here just fine, I have found it to be the perfect 3rd-world bike. It was actually a previous trip in South America that inspired me to choose that bike.
