Motorbike License Question (where to get)

This is one of those questions that definitely doesn't fit anywhere else.

Am from Australian originally, although have never ridden a motorbike in Australia (only in Bangladesh, Vietnam, India, Ethiopia and Indonesia). I had a motorbike license in Indonesia recently, but didn't get it renewed before leaving there and moving to Ethiopia where I live and work (which would have made sense).

Anyways, I am in a weird spot - as I have a motorbike here in Ethiopia - don't have a license - so not really riding. Am trying to get a license - have been trying for the last 6 months - but is almost impossible (because of this weird requirement where I have to get my degree validated in Australia etc. etc. - is very complicated). Would get it in Australia - but haven't had a license there for more than 18 years - so would only be able to get a Learner's Permit - and would have that for almost one year etc.

Have an apartment in Lima, Peru where I spend a lot of time over my holidays. However, as I do not have residency there - I cannot get a license there either.

Any suggestions about an easy place to go and get my motorbike license - even if I have to travel there? I know that normally there are residency requirements - so that is another issue.

Yes, I am one of those Third Culture individuals - so getting my license is more complicated than for most.

Thanks in advance for any answers. Cheers, Antony

If you had a licence in OZ then you should be able to recuperate the details. Most 1st world countries do a fast track full motorcycle licence course if you already have a learner permit. ( sometimes it's only a week if you're really competent and able to pass the written test as well as the practical). If you are an Oz citizen with an OZ passport you need to go back there to take a course/test and get your permit. It's only normally possible to get a permit in the country where you are if you are a resident. It's not worth getting a permit in a ''third world'' country as it won't be accepted elsewhere if you move around, it's better to get an internationally accepted licence from a major country like OZ and travel with an IDP ( International Driving Permit).

HTH.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
