receiving letters abroad

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how the Poste General (I think that's what it is called) works in practice? I am just about to get myself over to Morocco and someone wants to send me a letter. What's the surest way of getting it? (nothing valuable)

cheers,
Doug

Have your mail addressed to:

You
Poste Restante
CPO
City
Country

You can replace CPO (Central PO) with the name of a branch office, if you know its name and it's more convenient for you.

In the '80s I've used this extensively in NZ and in India, as well as other countries. Normally, I filled in a mail forwarding form before leaving a place, in case some mail arrived late. In one case in India mail got forwarded twice before catching up with me!

Sadly, these services co$t money in some countries these days.

We used the above system in New Zealand and the States and it worked very well. As far as we know all our mail and there was alot of it, all arrived without a problem.

Not of much use in Morocco but, the another thing we did when travelling in the States, was to rent a mail box at 'Mail box's excetera' originally in Monterey, as an address to have a car we bought registered to, but also we had alot of post from the UK sent there. When we moved up North we paid a small additional fee and moved the account to Seatle.

Poste Restante works fine on Morocco, or get an American Express card, you can't use it many places, but you can get mail sent to their office to collect, more reliable than most post offices in sub sahara.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
