I've been to Tomasina twice. About 3 years ago for 12 days and 2 years ago for 68 days on a bulk carrier. A lot of their cargoes come from Durban, S.A. and India. The biggest problem you may encounter if you go by sailboat is immigration. It's not the easiest place to enter. Tomasina is the largest port and the initial paperwork is landed there. It still has to go to the capital which is about 150 km up in the mountains (a nice ride). It's not that they don't "hanker to strangers", it's just their form of bureauacracy which they seem to understand O.K. (even if no one else does). I would contact an embassy (somewhere) and see if you can get the skinny on what is required for entry. The Catholic church seems to have alot of horsepower in the country and you might be able to work some kind of angle with them....... We carried 8000 tons of cargo for them and alot of doors were opened for us in the process. The problem you may encounter on a sailboat is that they will probably want you to leave on that boat or produce a plane ticket out of the country. If you're just "hitching a ride" you may get stuck. They probably have a Canadian embassy up in the capitol (you would have to look the name up as it consists of about 20 letters and I can't remember how to pronounce it) and you can probably get some information from them. They have a big yatcht club in Durban, S.A. and you may get lucky there. Maputo has a small yatcht club and that might be worth a try. Go into the bar, order a drink and talk to the bartender. They know everything and everbody and you might get lucky. You will really enjoy it if you get to go. Good luck. Smitty.
