Traveler's SOS fund?
Am I correct in thinking that there is some sort of overland traveler's SOS fund? i.e. a fund for travelers who have succumbed to a real problem while traveling -- for example, robbed of everything, no way home? I believe that I heard about this at the 2012 Ontario HU meeting.
The story is that we are broken down right now at the beginning of our travels. We are getting things dealt with and have had a great response from the local MC community.
The thing is that we have had multiple offers where local community members are offering to PayPal small sums of money ($20 or so). While we are most appreciative of such gestures, and while we are on a "low budget" trip, we are not in dire straits and don't feel comfortable accepting peoples' hard earned cash. After all, we are on extended vacation, while they are working hard at their jobs.
In this sense we can plainly say, "no thanks". Or suggest something else. Suggesting to "donate said fund to a charity of your choice" does not really seem to make sense with someone you haven't met for multiple reason.
I would rather be able to say: "We are most appreciative of your generous offer. In lieu of accepting your gift directly, might we suggest that donating said amount to XXXX, which will directly supports travelers who are in dire need of a helping hand".
