Travelling with a surfboard
Has anyone out there travelled with a surfboard? Is there any other way than piloting a chair? I'm planning to take a surfboard with me through Latin America, but seems like my vehicle choices are limited to basically three models, all Urals with sidecars.

I have carried a snowmobile in a sidecar. Down hill skis fit pretty well also. It really is possible to build a strong sidecar on a reasonably powerfull shaft drive japonese bike. Long ago I saw a solo bike with the surfboard mounted overhead like a sunshade. It must of been a bit quirky in the wind.

Why not a BMW with a side car? The chances of finding Ural spares in South America are slim to say the least.
Strip the chair back to its chassis & rest the board on that to keep it low. Is it a long or short board you intend carrying? You could a storage box above the surfboard for the rest of your luggage?

It'd be a long board (Well, 8ft6, so not my longest). I had thought about mounting it on a specially built rack above a sidecar (like a sort of roof) so I could still carry a passenger if I wanted to.
Necessity is the mother of invention!

Yeah, could be...just so long as I don't drop the bike on that side I guess. But a mate of mine is building malibu surfboards using carbon fibre instead of glass mesh. Could the board also become protection from gunfire?

To my mind, travelling any further than Kuta Beach to Uluwatu with a board on a bike is not an option. Especially a longboard. I'm going through Central/South America later this year, desperate to have my board handy, so I'm trying to convince a mate to do the trip in a 4WD and just connect at the best places. Otherwise, renting, begging or borrowing in tourist-y spots only, seems to be the only answer.

How about fixing your bike on your board and if it's a shaftie then you could stick a propeller on the end of the shaft and away you go. Piece of piss!

Geez, I've got a shaft drive, why didn't I think of that before! I could save a fortune on freight, too!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
