Why did you decide to go?

Hi everyone,

My question is to do with what people got out of their journeys and what was the motivation behind the trips.
I would love to hear why people set off.
Was it looking for something new, or running from something old? Did the fears and worries of life on the road simply add up to less than the fear of wasting another year living a 9-5 existence? Or is it much simpler, in that months riding is simply better than going to work everyday?!

I would love to hear people’s thoughts and experiences.
(My plan is to ride my 1981 Honda GL500 (essentially a cx500) from Yorkshire back to Sydney, and from there, who knows!)

Thanks!
Jared

It seemed a good idea at the time.

The hotel bar will always feel a bit pants until you remember the meal of cold tea and formerly government issue spam in some freezing tent.

Damn this châteaux la fitte and think of the poor lads who are still trying to work it out.

This is something that I have tried to put into words and understand what drives me to do it. I wrote this down in a bit of a tale on my blog. The link to it is here and gives a bit of an insight into it whilst keeping the trip reports in the same area. Take a look. Took me ages to write!

It's aptly named: why do it?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
