I'm in Bangkok now and was thinking about a similar trip but only for the month of July (work holiday).
I'm undecided about buying a bike here or... flying to Hanoi and renting as it's cheap and you can access Laos easily from up there. I've been to Laos once and was blown away by the beauty of the place, great for 2 wheels.
What have you found out so far?
After reading other peoples info on this site sounds like all the borders in the region (except china) are easy to cross.
Maybe we'll meet on the road or just pass info on this way, safe travels,
Poa

Hi Poa whats up?
I know for sure that crossing borders between
Laos Thialand and Cambody is O.K.
But iam not sure about Vietnam ,maybe from Vietnam t0 Laos it is O.k but to Vietnam it is more complex because as far as i know they allow to enter only below 170 cc . If you have new information about entering Vietnam please tell me.
Anyway if you planning to buy m/bike in Hanoi there are 2 good shops for that :
1)Coungs Motorbike Adventure (40 Luong ngoc quyen str.)I rented m/bike there and it was o.k
2)near that shop you have another one dont realy remember his name but you can find it easy
Both of this shops are near Mu May str.
The best m/bike than you can rent/buy is Rushen "Minsk". It is very reliable simple to fix 125 cc m/bike.
If you are decided to buy m/bike in Thialand give me some information about prices and m/bikes.
I begin my trip at August so may be we will meet
Have a nice and SAFE ride.

i would say that the best place to rent/buy a motorbike in this area and travel around is cambodia (related to the bikes choice and price) :

Hi Poa maybe you can give me some information about buying m/bikes from private person in Thialand,is it safe deal ?
is it more complex to make registration of license for m/bike ?
and maybe it is better to buy from well known shop?!
Anyway i know that buying from private person is much more cheaper than in the shop.
I would be glad to get some information
Have a good ride!
