hey brendan,
pretty certain the OP of this thread (northern comfort?) is long gone somewhere, probably back living at his Mum's!

But plenty of travelers heading along your way ... see my earlier post about
this. #14 in this thread on page one.

Your schedule/plan looks good! Biggest issue could be getting South out of the North East in February (New York). ICE/SNOW/COLD??

But once South should be OK ... with any luck. Once in Mexico and Cent. America, it's dry season and relatively COOL. But by May things will heat up again. So you've timed it about perfect to make it through. 6 months is a good chunk of time. You're very lucky!

It's tough duty traveling everyday with no breaks, but if paying hotels, then staying in one spot costs money too. Trade off. But I grow tired of the never changing "ride all day, find Hotel, unpack all the crap, walk around the town, have dinner, sleep. Wake up early, pack it all up again, Head out on the road" to repeat this menu again. After a week of this I need a break!

A travel partner is good if only to save on Hotel/camping fees. If wild camping then no worries. I'm in Mexico now (headed home).

Seems everyone here now have a car and are out on the road. The cities (for me) are nearly intolerable, yet some of the best sites are there. Horrible pollution and traffic.

Getting across Mexico quick takes some grit. It's a BIG COUNTRY. Guatemala is a good place to chill and recover once you've run the gauntlet. It's cheaper than Mexico.

Mexico gas is now $4.10 a US gallon ..(Up from $3.00 something a year ago) ..and still rising, so locals tell me.

USA average price for fuel is down to about $2.75 US gallon. (except California where is around $3.20)

Everything has gone WAY UP in Mexico, yet we still only get 13 (or so) pesos per dollar (at the border, less in the interior) It's no longer cheap, but Hotels are usually still good value. Food, not so much depending where you eat. (central markets are good)

Have a great trip, take your time, enjoy!

New to Horizons Unlimited?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
