Cuba, Cuba, Cuba!!! on the bicy
Cuba, by bicycle: I´m arriving at La Habana December 17th, Monday, then I go to Barbacoa, the eastern city of Cuba and start a long trip on my bicycle. Hitting Punta de Maisí, Guantánamo, Santiago, Bayamo, and all the way to west searching the Lighthouse Roncali at the west extreme. About 1600 km.
I´m an old man (63) but in good fit, I think will ride an average 30 km/day. I will sleep in family houses. My English is not very good, you are reading now, and my spoken English is worst, not a problem, when you are pushing the bicy don´t need speak. My mother tongue is Spanish. If you like sport, you enjoy adventure, you enjoy the country life in an "odd" society and all that related, write me. Cheers fellows

Hi Rualeloy, I was planning to do a similar bicycle trip like this last year but then I got a job offer.
I recommend reading the book "The Handsomest Man in Cuba," by Lynette Chiang. She did a bicycle trip there in the mid 1990's but the stories and advice that she gives in the book is very relevant.
There are some stretches of highways in Cuba that I would avoid riding your bike and instead take the bus. On some highways there is nothing to see. I would avoid Guantanamo because the scenery is bad there. Also, I would avoid riding from Santa Clara to Las Tunas on the main highway because it is incredibly boring and just filled with vehicles spewing smoke.
I wish I could go with you but I think I will still be in Europe.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
