East coast overland Africa travellers Oct 2008

We are a group of 3 women friends travelling east coast Africa, starting in Tunisia, ideally in early October. Very exciting stuff!
We will be in either a Toyota Hilux 3.0 TD or a 2.4l TD landcruiser Prado SX.
Basically we're looking for travel buddies, in particularly the northern countries. Either other vehicles covering the same route, for in convoy travel or bikers looking for a possible back up vehicle.
We are a bit anxious to travel alone in these regions.
As a rough indicator for the pace we hope to travel - Tunis to Capetown - in 4-5 months.
Otherwise, if there is anyone out there that knows what theyre doing and would be interesting in taking our 4th seat please contact.

Meg?

There is no need to be anxious for the northern countries. In general you may expect some "tourist hassle' in Egypt but Muslim countries are very safe to travel and people are respectful, also men towards women! Safest of all will be 'fundamatalistic' Sudan!

4 to 5 months is fast. If your trip is a "once in a life time" kinda trip I would take a months or 2 extra. We did it is 5 1/2 months (north bound) but we already came down the west side so we were on our way home.

If you need any info let me know.

Cheers,

Noel

women travelling in africa

hi meg?

i agree entirely with noel when my wife and i travelled she declared that she would happily travel in many parts of north africa and particularly sudan alone (come to think of it perhaps she meant she'd prefer it if i werent there!) youll probably get less hassle in the remoter areas than in the tourist regions follow the rules and dress conservatively and you will be fine!!!

in my experience strangers you meet on the road are less of a problem than strangers you agree to travel with

good luck and dont worry and i agree again with noel give yourself all the time you can you will need it

any particular problems contact me through the web site

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
