Hi all,
I'm preparing for this trip through East Africa on the KLR. Would you be interested?
More details here.

hi
Hello,
I will be buying a bike in SA in Oct of this year for a trip north. As a Canadian I am a little unsure how easy the process will be to register the bike and insure it, etc. as a non-resident. Any advice on that? I will be looking at dual purpose bikes in the 650 cc range including the KLR. How do you find the prices?
Do you have a carnet or you going to try to get through without one? I am just going up as far as Ethiopia and looping back to South Africa.
Cheers
Larry

Hi,
When you try to register the bike, they will ask you for your status expecting that you show them something that confirms you will be staying in SA for 2 years. However, this is SA and such a rule is a guidance. I'm here for the 2 year contract so I have a work permit and they were happy with this.
A standard insurance is easy and quick to get ... I'm looking around for more comprehensive insurance for the time of travelling ... we'll see.
As to the prices, you can expect to pay more than the US and European prices ... I'd say at least 30% more.
I'm going to get the carnet from the SA AA mostly because of Egypt. It looks like you don't need it given your plans.
Cheers,
Wojtek

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
