Charlie:
I too am heading south during mid January 2011.
I will be trucking my '09 KLR from kelowna B.C. to Olympia Wash. Then riding the coastal highway from Washington State to San Dieago.
From there I will be criss crossing baja California, then ferrying to Topolabampo, Copper Canyon etc. Hopefully having time to ride to the Tikal ruins in Guatemala. I have planned 8-10 weeks for my ride.

Hi Wayne,
It sounds like your going to be crossing the border at about the same time as me. I would be very happy to catch up and travel with you for a while. I also want to ride Copper Canyon so it would be good to have some company.
I am dropping my crated bike off on the 9th of December at the freight yard and it will be shipped on the 12th December from Fremantle in Western Australia and will arrive in Los Angeles on about the 12th of January. As soon as it clears customs I will be ready to head south, let me know if this fits in with your plans.
Regards,
Charlie

I've just landed in LA and my bike will be released from customs tomorrow, I'm keen to catch up with anybody around the LA area to talk through some ideas or get some pointers. I look forward to hearing from good people around LA.
