London to Cape Town

Hi There,

Saffa returning home...

I am planning a trip from London to Cape Town. Leaving London on the 29th of July 2010.

Will be travelling on a R1200GS, yes yes they warned me its too big and heavy, I know all that stuff, however there is nothing like a good challenge I always say..

My Route:

UK - West Ealing - London
France
Tunisia
Libya
Egypt
Sudan
Uganda
Tanzania
Malawi
Zambia
RSA - Cape Town

The trip will take me approximately 55 days if all goes well, will ride 3 days on and 1 day rest and plan to ride 350 to 500 km per day - that is if there are no problems along the way, a bit optimistic?

Have someone recently got a visa for Sudan from Cairo?
Have someone recently got a Visa for Libya from London?

I seem to be struggling with these two visas and no matter how hard I try it just does not seem to materialise - need help and current information please..

My website is https://sites.google.com/site/londontocapetown/?pli=1 if you want to have a look at my planning and how I am getting on.

I am sure there are many travellers out there heading south at the same time so I will probably see some of you on the way..and anny, but anny advice about anything relating to the journey will be much appreciated.

I am new to endurance, as green as they get...

Deon

a little optimistic

I have travelled the other way, not rushing but not hanging around too much and took 5 months, I would want at least 3. Riding that far when you will probably be tired, it is a lot more arduous than touring in Europe, is not really safe or enjoyable, you will also see little of the countries that you pass through.
However you do it have a good trip.

Little optimistic

Thank you very much for the reply, I am sure that it will be hard. The only thing that I cannot get any details on is the fuel stops, how plenty is fuel available, I have a 20 ltr tank, where will I get stuck were you found there are little fuel filling point around?

Did you do it alone?

Hi,

Last year i got my sudan visum in cairo. It took one day, 100US$ and som nerves but at the end it worked out fine 30° 2'21.54"N 31°14'2.64"E

Petrol was never a problem...the biggest distance was in Sudan from Wadi Halfar to Dongola. In Marsabit (Kenia) there is a petrol station so i was carying petrol for nothing

Have fun, Tobi

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
